The power of protein in a body recomposition process.

A high-protein diet can bring several advantages to the weight loss process, provided it is well-planned and balanced.

Here are the main advantages of increasing protein intake in our diet.

Greater Satiety

Foods rich in protein tend to increase the feeling of fullness, reducing appetite and decreasing the urge to eat between meals. This occurs because proteins slow down digestion and affect hormones such as ghrelin, which is responsible for hunger.

Maintaining Muscle Mass

In weight-loss diets, it's common to lose both fat and muscle mass. Adequate protein intake helps preserve lean mass, preventing muscle loss, which is essential for maintaining a healthy metabolism.

Increased Energy Expenditure

Protein digestion requires more energy from the body, resulting in a higher thermic effect (the body spends more calories digesting proteins than carbohydrates and fats).

This thermic effect contributes to an increase in total calorie expenditure.

Stabilizing Blood Sugar Levels

High-protein diets help prevent blood glucose spikes because they generally have a lower glycemic index. This reduces the risk of extreme hunger and excessive calorie intake due to fluctuations in sugar levels.

Support for Abdominal Fat Loss

Studies suggest that well-structured protein diets can promote the loss of abdominal fat. Visceral fat (located in the abdominal region) is one of the most dangerous types of fat for health and is associated with several metabolic problems.

Metabolism Support

Protein is an essential component for tissue growth and repair, and the production of enzymes and hormones. Adequate consumption helps maintain metabolic rate, preventing a slowdown in metabolism that can occur in restrictive diets.

Important Notes:

Despite the advantages, it is essential to balance protein intake with other macronutrients, such as fat and carbohydrates, to avoid nutritional deficiencies. Furthermore, it is necessary to choose high-quality protein sources (such as lean meats, eggs, fish, dairy products, legumes) and consider any pre-existing health conditions, especially those related to the kidneys.
